maybe this issue of identity is about terminology: what actually 'is' a New Zealand artist - are they defined by where they reside, or where they were born? - if that is so, arn't we undoing the mythology of a 'globally' connected digital culture in which location doesn't matter (so we are told)... or maybe it is important to actually do this, and relocate ourselves, here, in this place... (I'm hedging my bets). Also, is the question whether there is an active network of digital artists in NZ (ada is proof of that) or whether digital art makes it into the homes of everyday new zealanders...why should they know/ care....and... what is an international audience anyway? Colin, correct me if i'm wrong, but I imagine these same questions were being asked in 1919, but with perhaps very different agendas, and answers... . x su

I was also going to add is that Modern Art obviously had a huge impact on NZ except that it was not necessarily in the formative period identified by Colin. We are, of course, in a much different (and synchronic) mode of international idea exchange, so these lags are not really a factor now. ...
