Hi, I've been off in Wellington ignoring my email, and came back to a fearsomely full inbox. Delighted to see everybody using the list (I was afraid it would just be me and Sean). Cool. Welcome posters and lurkers alike. Just a reminder, though, that if you can think of anyone who you reckon would be interested please let them know, badger them, sign them up... the homepage is http://ada.waikato.ac.nz . The more the merrier, etc etc. ...

first an apology bcos for the last 10 days i've been immersed in a festival & have been unable to digest the list postings - now i'm starting from the most recent & going backwards & my brain isn't functioning 100% after being up til 4am at the closing party, but i want to respond briefly to adam's comment below about how to get nz artists involved in festivals .... ...

hi,

just thought i would insert an intro between posts...

i am interested in this list because i think its amazing to see so much enthusiasm about getting some local momentum going in the new media / digital /IP arts (whatever you want to call it)...although i have to confess to being one of those awkward correspondants that may sound a little out of touch from time to time as I havent lived in nz for almost 6 years...so please excuse the odd ill-informed blunder i will unwittingly make ...

matter, but if there really is a desire by those on the ADA list and others for nz to insert itself into the 'international new media discourse' (yek- i hate myself for writing that already ) more often than it presently does, then there needs to be some discussion about profiling at the ADA meeting - especially (i think) how to get nz

perhaps thanks to the internet and its technological kin, regionalism has taken a bit of a back seat in new media art. partly because showing art internationally as an artist in a small or isolated country can mean packaging a preview tape off overseas, or responding by e-mail and sending a URL. i'm not sure whether geography is such a shaping factor, or at least is a determining factor in who gets noticed. having said that it would still be cool to be living in one of the centres. ...

but surely the 'culture of reception' needs some strong signals across the www from nz? i think perhaps one of the problems is that there are very few points from nz that are 'transmitting' (to follow Caros analogy :-) ) into the international headspace...it doesnt have to matter, but if there really is a desire by those on the ADA list and others for nz to insert itself into the 'international new media discourse' (yek- i hate myself for writing that already ) more often than it presently does, then there needs to be some discussion about profiling at the ADA meeting - especially (i think) how to get nz artists involved in festivals either remotely or in person (such as the Next 5 Minute festival I mentioned in an earlier email) ...

Anyway, enough rant. It's good to be here, good to hear all your voices, nice to have a list which is locally focused for a change.

Yep! And I should add to the introductions... Kia ora koutou, it's great to have everyone here talking, so props to Stella and Sean for that. As some of you will know, I've called for interest from people on fibreculture http://www.fibreculture.org for a conversation about NZ networks but I am aware the :fc: model doesn't really make much sense here. In particular the crossovers between new media art / technology policy / activism / education are much less visible - mostly due to the lack of relevant media IMHO. Anyway that's a big discussion for another time. The main thing is that people involved in digital arts could use a place to talk and now we have one. ...

Hi everyone,

I have to apologise first off because I've only just managed to get on the list..something to do with working for the City Council, they like to be subjective with what email lists I am allowed to join. So I am kind of behind the eight ball so to speak, and have only been checking the discussion out via the archives. ...

everyone knows christchurch is the real adelaide - vineyards, anglophilia, culture with a capital c and white supremacy :7.

indeed. they?re sister cities in more ways than one. the eerie towen planning echos (that grid system, the centrality of the rivers - torrens and avon, the edward gibbon wakefield connection ) perplexingly, both proudly proclaim their status as ?the garden city? and ?the cathedral city?. & note the curiously high incidences of bizarre violent crime in both places . all christchurch needs now is a pioneering cyberfeminist movement ...

Yeah, with due respect to Colin (if he's on list), I think Charles Brasch's associates might have had quite a bit to say about this claim :). My average knowledge of art history would also indicate that per capita NZ has probably had more modern art than a lot of other countries... anyway if William Dart is around at the talk I'm sure he will quickly set Colin straight :) ...

Hello Ada it is great so much is happening in hamilton, maybe I'm jealous, but I'd love to hear more details. (sorry, I should be using 'we', ) I've been forwarding some ada stuff to others in the "new media/ digital" (mmm let's really discuss these terms sometime...) crowd in Dunedin, and we'd really like to know the specifics of what people on this list are up to, and where everyone located. Getting to Spark is a real challenge for us at the School of Art, as it is right in the middle of teaching time, and travel to another island is difficult to secure...So we'd love to see the discussion here grow and make us feel not quite so alone. Maybe the quick bio thing could help.... ...
